The Raw Ingredients: The Heavy Acrylics and Pastes Behind the Texture

A blank canvas is fragile, but the materials I throw at it are incredibly tough. People often ask me what specific brands of paint I use to keep my heavy, thick textures from cracking or falling off the canvas over time. Today, I am opening up my studio supply cabinets.
To build pieces that last for generations, you cannot use cheap, watery paints. You need high-pigment, professional-grade materials that can hold their shape when piled high on a canvas.
Here are the three essential ingredients that make up the DNA of my artwork:
    • Heavy-Body Acrylics: My absolute go-to paint is professional heavy-body acrylic. I choose brands like Liquitex Professional and Golden Artist Colors. These paints have a thick, buttery consistency. They do not shrink or flatten out as they dry, meaning the dramatic ridges I sculpt stay exactly as I left them.
    • The Secret Medium: To get that signature, cratered look, I mix my acrylics with heavy modeling paste and coarse gel mediums. This gives the paint physical volume and acts like a strong glue, locking the heavy layers onto the cotton canvas.
    • Raw Baku Sand: For works inspired by the Azerbaijani landscape, I literally blend raw, sifted sand directly into the wet paste. This creates a gritty, stone-like texture that reflects the natural earth.

When these materials dry, they fuse together into a rock-solid, archival monument of emotion. Every tube of paint and jar of medium is an investment into the premium quality of the final artwork.
